El Alto. Bolivia’s more impoverished side. These buildings you witness here spread through miles. Interesting fact: If you live in Hong Kong, the higher you live on a mountain or hill (example: Hong Kong Island) the richer you are considered.
In Bolivia, it is just the opposite. If you live in brick homes like these uphill, you are considered trash, and the further up you live, the poorer you are considered. If you live on the ground however, you are considered wealthy. El Alto is the largest city in Latin America where drug trafficking is very high. People from El Alto come downhill to the capital city, La Paz, to work on the street for drugs. They either shine people’s shoes, perform circus tricks or wipe people’s car windshields during red traffic lights. What’s even more comfortless is that children as young as 7 years old are addicted to crack cocaine, and working on the streets to get drugs. It’s not the least bit pleasant.
