Hope is believing that things can change.

I have two kids. Emmett is 8 and Maisie is 5. They are rad little humans who make me laugh, frustrate me to no end on occasion, and surprise me constantly. Emmett is my sensitive introvert and Maisie is a walking YouTube show. I love them fiercely.

It’s hard having your whole heart just out there, walking around, completely unprotected. That’s the feeling of dropping your kids off at school in a world of intruder trainings. I can’t protect them all the time and it’s painful and scary and overwhelming.

I have to focus on what I can do.

I teach them to take care of themselves and understand consent. I show them what it looks like to make healthy choices with what we eat (some days go better than others). We take taekwondo and learn self defense. I encourage them to stand up for themselves and others when someone is being mean.

I do these things because I have to believe that they can create also change. They can build a better space for them to exist in as they grow up. They will fight for the underserved and tell someone who needs to hear it, β€œno.” I can’t change the whole world so I start with the things I can. I can be better for them and for myself. I can show them how.

I want them to be adults who take care of themselves so today we start with eating more broccoli, more sunscreen, and more karate chopping for all of us.
