This day...was fucking hard. We took a 3 hr taxi ride up and down windy, bumpy dirt roads from Ollantaytambo to this parking lot with a little bathroom shack about half an hour from the little town, Soray, which is at the base of the lake’s trail. It was pretty clear skies with drizzle here and there but nothing major. That hike, was no joke. I am no avid hiker by any means, but this hike was the steepest uphill climb I have ever done. It was an hour and half of nonstop climbing on a muddy trail, we didn’t use walking sticks or a horse like others did, and we definitely had to stop plenty of times bc the elevation was hitting us hard. We finally got to the lake, 14,000 ft, and it was already starting to get foggy, but that turquoise blue water was breathtaking with part of the snow capped mountain peeking through the mist (second pic). After about 15 minutes it started to get windy, colder, and the fog rolled in in full force (first pic). Before we knew it was pouring rain, we were alone, and the trail was a sunken muddy mess. We ran down the mountain trail for what seemed like forever until we finally got to the parking lot where our driver was waiting for us. We were exhausted, soaking wet, and still had a 3 hr drive back down the windy, bumpy, muddy roads to get home. Honestly, I was discouraged with how quick the Peruvian mountains turned on us. But I can’t be too upset, we did a hike many do not choose to do, and we did it without help and without the hassle of a group.
