Brain awareness week

How can stem cells help with brain repairs?

Unlike other organs in the human body, the brain is poor at repairing itself and any damage is often permanent.

A great deal of research is taking place to see what can be done to help with regeneration, if the brain is affected by trauma such as a stroke or diseases such as Alzheimer’s, including the use of stem cells.

Last year scientists at Cambridge University and the Wellcome Trust identified a new type of stem cell in the brain which they say has a high potential to repair.

Scientists hope that by targeting stem cells it may be possible to improve repairs without surgery.

Dr Shinya Yamanaka was awarded the Millennium Technology Prize in 2012 for his work on ethical stem cell research.

The nominations for the Millennium Technology Prize open on April 1 with any organisation in a STEM- related discipline– such as universities, research institutes, academies of science and technology, companies and industries¬– invited to nominate a remarkable individual or team whose innovation has changed society.
