Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces is the 73rd President of the United Nations General Assembly. Among her past career achievements are being a published poet, the former Ecuadorean Foreign Minister (two times over), and a former Minister of National Defence. With her inauguration in 2018, she officially became the fourth woman and the first Latina to ever lead the UN General Assembly, a feat that she hopes will inspire more women to pursue positions of leadership.

One of the President of the UN General Assembly’s main areas of focus for her tenure is the issue of gender parity. From the panels she puts together to the ones she sits on, she ensures that women are as represented in the conversation as men are.

When delivering her speech in 5 June 2018 she said: “i would like to dedicate this election to all the women in the world who are participating in politics today and who face political and media attacks marred by machismo and discrimination. I would like to pay tribute to the women who struggle every day to access jobs on equal terms; to the women and girls who are victims of violence; to the girls and adolescents who are demanding access to quality information and information. I will always be committed to them.” 🤩

We could write pages and pages on women and gender parity but we ran out of words after reading her speech! We wish her a successful steward of the assembly!
