Throwback Thursday Review (2 of 2)- 5/5 ⭐️-“L.A. Confidential” is the 1997 neo noir masterpiece directed by Curtis Hanson (“8 Mile”), it won 2 Oscars back in 1998 for Adapted Screenplay and Supporting Actress for Kim Basinger. Now while I don’t deny that James Cameron deserved to win Best Director, Best Picture should of gone to this and not “Titanic”, easily a top 15-20 movie from the 90s.The film tells the story of a group of LAPD officers (Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe and Kevin Spacey) in 1953, and the intersection of police corruption, murders and Hollywood. The acting is impeccable and the screenplay is a work of art, layered and so detailed capturing the glitz and glamour of 1950s Hollywood and also the eerie darkness of the town, feeling very much at home with noir films of that era. I loved how the script dived deep into the psychology of these not so perfect people, even the good guys seeming capable of evil deeds and being shown to be partly damaged and human. The action serves a purpose in the film; it isn’t done just for the sake of style, at times it’s done to develop a character. The atmosphere and detailed production design are a rich gel where the strands of narrative form with the screenplay doing a usually impossible task of keeping many stories that sometimes intertwined straight. The film is currently streaming on Netflix.

The 3 headed lead that were Pearce, Spacey and Crowe were all fantastic bouncing great off each other and elevating their work. It was especially great for Crowe and Pearce to be working with Spacey who was at the prime of his career at the time almost fresh off his Oscar win for “The Usual Suspects”.
Kim Basinger which while I still feel robbed Juliane Moore for the Oscar that year, was definitely amazing in resembling classic femme fatales of those old black and white movies. She oozes with sexuality and plays the woman with secrets to perfection.#LAConfidential#Oscars#AcademyAwards#FilmNoir#FemmeFatale#LosAngeles#DannyDevito#KevinSpacey#russellcrowe#theusualsuspects#8Mile#KimBasinger#Memento#the90s#batman#batmanreturns#americanbeauty#gladiator#americangangster#itsalwayssunnyinphiladelphia#hoffa#matilda#seven
