My last day of off the floor training was wound care and ostomy orientation. There are different types of ostomies.
1️⃣Ileostomy
2️⃣colostomy
3️⃣urostomy
4️⃣j-pouch.
Ostomies are openings from inner organs to reroute our waste into an outer pouch. They opening that is created is called a stoma, which should be pink to dark pink. If blue, purple, or gray, it can be an emergent situation that there is not enough perfusion. An ostomy can be temporary or permanent. Important nursing care to remember and teach to patients is that the pouch should be emptied when it is 1/3 -1/2 full.
