After relocating its four bottlenose dolphins to the US Virgin Islands, Dolphinaris Arizona has confirmed that they will no longer house dolphins if they are to reopen. The company stated on Tuesday that the Scottsdale location will reopen as a new concept, not involving dolphins, once the inspection is concluded. -
All four of Dolphinaris’s former dolphins have been relocated to Coral World Ocean Park in St. Thomas, where they will take up permanent residence in the facility’s newly constructed sea-pen. The facility curator, Lee Kellar, stated that the dolphins will participate in park programs, such as touch interactions, feeding opportunities, and swim-with encounters. While Dolphinaris vowing to no longer house dolphins seems like a win, Coral World is the same if not worse than Dolphinaris. The four dolphins, who are potentially immunocompromised, will be housed in a sea-pen that is known for its limited water circulation and poor water quality. Based on Clean Water Act, the bay in which the facility sits is not fit for human swimmers 40% of the year. Water Bay is frequently effected by pollution and rainfall runoff, completed with human feces.

The death of four dolphins in just 16 months prompted Dolphin Quest Oahu to terminate their contract with Dolphinaris Arizona and announce that they’d be taking their two dolphins, Liko and Noelani, back. However, plans changed when Dolphin Quest and Dolphinaris made a joint decision to keep all four dolphins together — resulting in Liko and Noelani being relocated to St. Thomas rather than Hawaii.
