One of my favourite pix of my daughter at around 16 months-old. My little girl is sharp as a whip, adorable when it suits her, and a masterful button pusher. She is relentless.

I think I’ve seen the worst of the bug that’s hit our family today. Sore throat, running nose, eyes tearing and a banging headache. I hate that when I’m in this state I can’t really be the best possible version of myself for my kids.

When mama is home because she’s sick, it’s only natural that mama duties continue to pool around her. There is no downtime to mothering.

I could’ve been gentler with both my baby girl and her elder brother this evening. Dealing with work urgencies, and physical incapacitation (imagine tender breastfeeding boobs in that mix), while trying to play nice with bickering kids (whose kids don’t bicker?) is a common but difficult domestic reality.

I sent my daughter to bed, after having read to her, with a hug and a confession. I told her that while she drives me crazy, I love her lots.

But I was probably the worst possible sort of coach to my son tonight. We were going through the final chapter for his Chinese assessment tomorrow. I was irritable and short with him when he had trouble focusing. His constant fidgeting drives me nuts. As does his tendency to gloss over details, never stopping to check his work—as if he can’t possibly ever make a mistake. And I let all my feelings show tonight. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

At moments like this, I come to see why some animals eat their young. Well, tomorrow is another day. We start afresh and try to ace it in our own fashion.
