#Archives 5.15.17 Chris Ofili No Woman, No Cry c. 1998 oil paint, acrylic paint, graphite, polyester resin, printed paper, glitter, map pins and elephant dung on canvas Stephen Lawrence was stabbed to death in a racist attack by a gang of white youths while waiting for the bus in 1993. After his death, five suspects were arrested but nobody was charged. In a later investigation, the police department, who was responsible for bringing Stephen’s killers to justice, was deemed institutionally racist. Through much activism and hard work by Stephen’s mother, Doreen Lawrence, and a few others, two of the original suspects were eventually convicted of murder in 2012. If you look closely, you’ll notice that there’s a collaged image of Stephen’s face in each tear drop.
