What do I miss? Everybody’s company. The companionship I would get from my parents and my siblings. I miss that. We were born and raised in Dhaka, and came to America from Dhaka. We miss everything about Dhaka. The environment, my siblings, everything.
What would you do if you could go to Dhaka right now?
If I go to Dhaka now, I won’t recognize anything. That’s why I can’t plan what I’d do in advance. If I recognized the places, then I could.. Like, before there was this feeling that if I go to Dhaka, I’d see my mother. Now, my mother is no more. So, I don’t know what would be the point of going. After a long time, I thought I’d go to my father-in-law. He’s the only older person left. So, I’ll go visit him first. That’s the one plan I have.
Shahjadi is still waiting for her papers and remains undocumented. She hasn’t been back to Bangladesh in 22 years.
