🔺MIGRANT CARAVAN UPDATE
.
Monday, the next wave of migrants began their journey from San Pedro Sula, a notoriously dangerous city in Honduras, to the US. Most migrants learned of this caravan via social media and have been leaving by the hundreds this week. Estimates place the total caravan size over 2,000 members; those interviewed simply seek a better life, job, and safety. Franklin Martinez, a father traveling with his daughters, said “I know that in Mexico they are helping us”.
.
Upon the first wave of migrants to the Honduras-Guatemala border, the caravan broke through a police checkpoint. Guatemala continues reinforce checkpoints across the border to ensure safety for all parties. Last year, chaos erupted when a previous caravan broke through a Mexico-Guatemala border fence.
.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador responded to this news today, noting that ‘it is best for the Central American governments to persuade their citizens to stay’. However those that do enter will be presented options and have their rights respected.
.
Most migrants of previous caravans returned home or began a new life in Mexico. Their fate of entering the US appears to be uncertain as the US continues without the necessary border improvements. Both the US and Mexico have had tremendous issues responding to previous caravans.
