First light on a cold winter’s morning. While kneeling in the snow behind my tripod as the sunlight began to spread across the trees on the ridge, a school bus made its way along the dirt road at the edge of the field I was in. I was too far away for its passengers to be able to recognize what I was up to, so I couldn’t help but wonder what they might be thinking if they’d spotted me sitting in the middle of this field in the early morning cold. Would they understand the draw that had lured me from a warm fire three miles distant? Probably not.
