Rebel Without a Cause - 1947 Screen Test (Part 1 of 7)
Following Brando’s Career Timeline we are now at the last stage before his first major film role... In 1947, Brando performed a screen test for an early Warner Brothers script for the novel Rebel Without a Cause (1944), which bore no relation to the film eventually produced in 1955.
Despite intuitively working with the camera, Brando rejected a $3,000 weekly salary and returned to stage. Ironically when Nicholas Bay made the 1955 picture that used little of Robert M. Linder’s tome bar the title, New York Times critic Bosley Crowther chastised James Dean for “imitating Marlon Brando in varying degrees”
The screen test is included as an extra in the 2006 DVD release of A Streetcar Named Desire.
