💗 SELF CARE 💗 As the new teaching year approaches, it’s easy to get lost in the planning for lessons, units, assessment, displays and other elements of the curriculum and instruction.
But something equally important is planning for your own self care. One of the reasons for the attrition rates of teachers in the first five years is burnout. And it’s no wonder, with all the expectations placed on teachers as well as the internal drive to give students your best to encourage them to do theirs.
Looking after yourself is crucial. Small things add up. Ensuring you have recess out of your classroom as often as you can, preferably with a cup of tea, to give a little bit of a mental break consistently rather than ‘just doing that extra thing’ gives you a moment of clarity that adds up over time. 
Pausing for three deep cleansing breaths as often as you think of it can calm your nervous system even while you are in full teacher mode is also a really simple way to maintain some equilibrium.
