Rumoured to be the inspiration behind Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial, this is the beautifully haunting #OldJewishCemetery in #Prague. Serving its role for 300 years, the #Jewish community asked again and again for more land for its dead but was repeatedly turned down. Instead, the changing rulers simply gave them more dirt and demanded they be clever with what they had. As such, the #cemetery you visit today is raised from ground level because 12 layers of the dead reside there under ageing and moss covered #tombstones. This area also became the #ghetto during the war and is actually one of the better preserved in Europe but only because Hitler had sinister plans to turn it into a #museum of a dead race. A bittersweet experience.
