There have been 4 versions of the Merkava. It is the Main Battle Tank of the Israel Defense Force and began development in the 1970s. During the 2006 Lebanon war between Israel and Hezbollah, the IDF (Israel Defense Force) deployed the Merkava. However, an Israeli soldier said that the Hezbollah soldiers were “trained and highly qualified,” and 52 Merkava IVs were hit by Russian-made anti-tank guided missiles. The IDF remained happy with their Main Battle Tank’s performance despite the missiles alone penetrating 22 tanks. 5 were also destroyed and 1 was due to an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) resulting in several casualties. It wasn’t all bad news though as the majority of Israeli tanks penetrated were Mark lls and Mark llls (both earlier versions compared to the Mark IV) but then again 5 Mark IVs were also hit and it’s armour useless. Despite the tank’s failure the Israeli Defense Force declared itself satisfied with the performance but have since equipped it with a Trophy Active Defense System in 2009. It was extremely effective and the Trophy ADS intercepted Rocket-Propelled Grenades and Anti-Tank missiles fired at it by terrorists in 2009 meaning not a single Merkava was destroyed between the years 2009 and 2014. The Active Defense System is fitted to the back of the tanks turret and fires a shotgun-like blast at incoming missiles and grenades. It then notifies the crew which way the projectile came from and can transmit the coordinates to nearby ground and air units through a battlefield management system called Tzayad. I hope this was worth the wait! #tank #tanks #history #merkava #merkava4 #merkavatank #israeldefenseforces #warthunder #worldoftanks #wot #wt
