First you admire↠ then you climb↠ then you discover↠ your favorite view at Burning Man 🔥 {a Lodestar story}
↡
I spent all week biking around this installation and curiously admiring it from afar, with no indicators at first (during daylight) that it was climbable. I’d been pointing in its direction and referring to it as the jellyfish plane, banana peel thing, or whatever else came to mind at the time↠ fellow burners, what were you calling it?! Lodestar is its name.
↡
At the end of the week, after the man burned, I saw a line forming and knew what I had to do↠ wait patiently, then get the hell up to that vantage point. So I did.
↡
This installation is the work of @randypolumbo, described as “a futuristic, interactive, techno-organic flower made of a Lockheed Martin Loadstar military jet, and fabricated elements of blown glass, crystal, mirror, structural steel, and miles of roll cage tubing.”
↡
Once I climbed the steep ladder through the plane and found my footing at the top, I could see through bits and pieces of the foundation my boots were exploring, and could feel the whole structure around me... shake, a wee bit. I was exhilarated.
↡
I moseyed my way to the edges to take in my favorite playa view yet: real moon on one side of the night sky, fake moon on the other (wait, which is which?! thanks for that, @lekhawashington), a glittering desert floor boasting fires abound, bikes and art cars in transit, all while exuding the sounds and sights of expressionism, exploration, and bliss. 🌓
↡
I could’ve stayed and observed for hours, but I knew the curious wanderers looking up from below deserved a taste of what I was soaking in. Whatever expectations I conjured up while I waited, this piece exceeded them from the inside out.
↡
On the piece, Polumbo says, “What frankly was a weapon, today is a provocative canvas upon which viewers can explore their curiosity. I am excited about ideas like pollination and propagation and, of course, transformation.”
↡
If you ever get the chance↠ climb it, whatever “it” is to you. Big thanks to the artist @randypolumbo and any volunteers/donors responsible for offering this experience, it was so memorable. ♥️ #burningman
