Teddy Bear cholla. They are beautiful but this is one of the gnarliest plants in the desert. My first experience with cactus came from stepping on one of these and having my foot skewered to my shoe. Since then, I have crashed into them, extracted parachutes from them, pulled them out of my hands, pulled them out of friends’ hands, even pulled them off the nose of a baby bighorn sheep.
