CRY FREEDOM
Premiered November 5, 1987 Los Angeles, CA ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It took the major Hollywood studios until the mid-1980s to address the anti-Apartheid struggle. Television images of police brutality in South Africa had spread awareness of the repressive nature of the white minority regime, rekindled memories of the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. and finally led the U.S to join the international boycott of South Africa.
In 1987, Hollywood released its first anti-Apartheid movie, Cry Freedom. Ostensibly about Steve Biko (Denzel Washington), the distinguished leader of the Black Consciousness Movement tortured and killed in 1977 while in police custody, the film is mainly about the tribulations of Donald Woods (Kevin Kline), a liberal white South African newspaper editor. Woods flees the South African police, with his family, having endured threats of imprisonment and death if the truth about Biko’s murder were published.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
