Many people are astounded when I tell them I prefer typing out my notes rather than printing out the lectures to annotate them.. I’ve heard the ‘How can you study by just typing up notes?’ and ‘Don’t you find its less effective?’ questions way too many times since I switched up my note-taking style last year.. 🤭

1️⃣ Now that I’m a third year medic, I’ve finally learned to adapt my studying style to the lecture being studied. It is very subjective but works for me. The way I like to do it is printing out and annotating only the lectures that have some calculations in them. I struggle with topics like renal and statistical Medicine, which makes sense for me to put some extra focus into that Medical niche! 🤷🏼‍♂️

2️⃣ In addition to typing up notes on other fields of Medicine, I often make sure to study those notes at a time closer to the exam (ie. a week before) and make written summarised notes (not more than a page per lecture) for every lecture. In that way, I go over those summarised notes on the night of the exam. This gives me exposure to the studied material three times before my exams which works for me, I don’t find I have anymore time in Medical school to do more than this! 👨🏻‍⚕️

3️⃣ Medical school is all about the note-taking style that suits you. I’ve seen many polls addressing this topic and the majority favour annotating their notes by hand rather than typing up their notes. I’m NOT saying that this is the only way to study lectures in Medical school.. nah, you can try it out but it might not work out for you. It is however, how I study and I find that it helps cement some of the most important concepts into my mind! 😅

4️⃣ One very useful tip I could give to a first or second year medics is to make friends with those in the years above you. They got their notes, you need notes.. connect the dots, ask them for their notes and then edit them about to your liking. Lectures rarely change at my school and it’s just the same lecturer giving the same ol’ lecture to a different batch of students! 🤷🏼‍♂️

❓ What do you guys find works for you? Do you alternate styles or employ a strict regimen to help you focus when studying? 🗂
