and that means annual hose testing.
Each year all of the fire hose on all of Burlington Fire Department’s apparatus is unloaded, one truck at a time and pressure tested to make sure it’s fit for duty.
Given the strenuous demands on our fire hose under extreme conditions, from the high heat environments in a structure fire to the freezing temperatures of our Vermont winters, hose testing provides an opportunity to check for flaws and weak areas that could cause bursting under working pressures.
Although it has happened in the past, it is safer for the hose to burst during a controlled setting when testing, than to rupture while firefighters are inside a burning building extinguishing a fire.
Teamwork is a must during hose testing, as it requires a lot of manual labor to stretch out over 2000 feet of hose per truck, charge it, drain it and re-pack it to get the trucks back in-service and ready for duty in a timely fashion.
