#AStarIsBorn (2018): 7/10 ⠀ Directed by and starring Bradley Cooper (‘The Hangover’, ‘American Sniper’), A Star Is Born tells the classic tale of one man’s career-defining alcohol-infused downward spiral as he discovers and helps a young girl find the fame she thoroughly merits for her talents, in this case Ally, played by Lady Gaga. The 2018 release is actually the fourth iteration of the ‘Star Is Born’ story, with the first coming way back in 1937, although a large number of us will not have seen a version in our own lifetime. ⠀ The film opens with an absolutely exhilarating first act, which encapsulates the music, the meeting between Jack and Ally, and their first on-stage performance together, filled with pure emotion. You can really feel Cooper’s passion for the project, and for the music; he really captures the essence of performing live on stage, with scenes being filmed on location at the Glastonbury music festival. There is no doubting that it’s an impressive debut behind the camera. ⠀ For all the exhilaration the film has to offer in the first half, the story itself has moments where it struggles to keep up the pace as we approach the tail end of the second. The story is still a riveting watch, but it somehow runs out of steam a little. Despite this, there is still brilliance sprinkled sporadically throughout the remainder of the plot, in particular, the contrasting performances from Cooper and Gaga, and the struggles they both face coping with Jack’s alcoholism and substance abuse. ⠀ There are elements of A Star Is Born that are truly majestic and uplifting, with a number of memorable songs to boot.
