72-year-old male presented to our clinic with a seven month history of “growing boobs”.
•
On physical exam he had what looked like gynecomastia - a condition where men develop breast tissue behind the nipple.
•
On mammogram the patient had an irregular mass in the upper posterior left breast.
•
An ultrasound showed a solid mass with internal vascularity (blood vessels).
•
Biopsy confirmed invasive breast carcinoma.
•
Male breast cancer is rare and accounts for less than 1% of all cases of breast cancer. It often presents at a later age than female breast cancer and usually is more advanced at initial presentation.
•
Risk factors: radiation to the chest, family history of breast cancer and BRCA-2 gene mutations.
