This birthday, I decided to return back to a love I once had with a pen I used to carry. Deciding on what to give myself, I decided to write me a letter- here it is:
Dear Brooks,
I first must start by saying how much I love & admire everything about you. From your beauty, your strength, your zeal even down to your glow, you have grown into a wonder to behold. I am beyond proud of the progress you’ve made. Watching you evolve and develop into the jewel you are currently, has been a scene worth watching. Girl, I’ve watched you survive every negative stereotype that could be said about a black girl from the Projects. Overcoming the abandonment of parents, breaking through educational boundaries and all done while climbing out of bloodline struggles.
I’ve seen you stand in some very high moments and I’ve also seen you sit in some very dark moments. I’ve seen many darts thrown at you but like a FBI vest you’ve been bulletproof. With the darts thrown, you’ve dodged some and gotten hit by a few; either way you keep standing. Destiny’s Child ain’t got nothing on this destined child; a survivor you are! Despite all the adversities you’ve faced, I’ve seen you remain as a cool breeze in the mist of much chaos. The first 27 years are behind you, so cheers to year number 28. I pray the days in front of you, outdo all days behind you; the best is still yet in front of you! Someone once said, ‘the sparkle depends on the flaws in a diamond’ it has to be true because to look at you today, you’ve never been brighter.
