《After the Storm 1》
•••
I was in a strange state of mind when I took this shot. Two days earlier we had hiked out of Yakushima island under the heaviest rain I experienced outdoors. Our full GoreTex outfit kept us dry for about an hour only and the path itself had basically become a water stream anyways. This was all due to the severe tropical storm named Saola. We caught what seemed to be the last ship exiting the island, and the following day we packed and left Kagoshima. When we were hoping for a pause the rain kept on strengthening and we understood that we had to jump in the car and take off before things get too sketchy. The last stretch remains my scariest driving experience to this day. Wipers at full speed would barely give enough visibility to see the tiny coastal road. Water was soon running down the steep flanks, overflowing the road and dropping down the cliffs on the other side. With our typical budget mini tin can rental I could easily imagine us just going with the flow at some point. When we parked it was a big weight off our chests. After our meal we dropped dead in bed. For only two hours. A dam uphill was overflowing and threatening to break. The police was evacuating everyone. We took a bus, got down in a high school where we received blankets, food and water, picked a spot and tried to sleep despite the walls and roof shaking hard. I have to say how amazed I am every time I see Japanese dealing with such situations. They are incredibly resilient, calm and unselfish. In the morning the storm was gone and there were not many signs of what happened the night before except on the sea side. Ashore huge waves were still braking hard and a lot of debris were piled up along the coast. Still most families were out for a stroll, enjoying the beautiful new day together.
