📸 @alahamdan | I’ve always noticed that media shares pictures of Africans -specially in Middle and South Africa- holding plates to represent hunger and thirst, and therefore encourage people to donate. I find this extremely sad. In Africa, people are connected to the land in a way people living in busy cities won’t fully understand. From the land comes their food, and even their houses.
Such pictures represent culture, history and the beauty of working hard for a better life. Which is something we all do, right? But how come a picture of me in a meeting is not sad, it could actually be inspiring, but a picture of a girl or a woman in Mid-Africa holding trays with food in them, is sad?
This little girl, was heading to her mom to add some herbs to dinner. It’s a little simple story of something we all do at home. Breaking stereotypes that live in our heads is challenging, but it starts by simply looking at things from a different perspective. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
دائما ما كنت أرى صور العديد من الشعوب في وسط وجنوب افريقيا، يحملون صحوناً وأواني طهي ويسيرون بها إما فارغة أو مليئة. وعادة ما تُطرح هذه الصّور لنقاش قضيّة الجوع أو العطش أو الفقر.
ارتباط الانسان الافريقي بالأرض يفوق تصوّر الانسان ابن المدينة . فمن الأرض يزرعون، يحصدون، يلتقطون ويطحنون. وطريقة النّقل الأساسية لديهم هي الأواني التي يحملونها.
أي، الأواني تدلّ على حرفة، على مهنة، على سعي وجهد وعمل وآلات زراعية كثيرة يبتكرونها هم بأبسط المعدات عند الحاجة. جهدهم في تلك الصّور، لا يقل عن الجهد لو التقطت لنفسي صورة وأنا في قمة تركيزي خلال اجتماع، أو لمهندس على سطح بناية مع عمّال.
المشكلة لا تكمن في أنّ الصّور الجميلة التي تحمل أجمل التعابير الثقافية والتاريخية لشعب ما يتم تحجيمها لتدل على الجوع والمجاعات، بل أصبح تداول هذه الصّور يعتبره البعض، إهانة لذلك “الافريقي” المسكين. فصورة كهذه، لفتاة في قريتها، تحمل لوالدتها اعشاباً لتضعهم لوجبة الغذاء، قد تحمل معان أخرى لمن اعتاد على رؤية الجانب “الفقير” من افريقيا، فتصبح هذه الصّورة حزينة ومثيرة للشفقة، بدل جميلة. هذه الصورة ببساطتها، تحمل الكثير من معاني الحياة الحقيقية التي فقدناها في المدن.
