Hey all, I had a really good question from @marsupaya about colour palette recently. Her question was ‘How do you choose your colour palette? Do you start from one hue and then work on the rest? Or take colours from photos (and palette generators)?⁣⁣⁣

This is something that comes with practice. As you make (lots) of patterns and study more patterns, you’ll start to develop an intuition about the colour palette you prefer to use. Your colour palette is part of your voice and your identity as a designer and you’ll start to notice which colour you are more drawn to than others.⁣⁣⁣

For instance, my colour palette will always involve one or more of these colours - sunshine yellow, grass green, peachy pink and china blue. I’d also include some neutral colours (like an off-white) and a dark colour (like midnight blue) for contrast. ⁣⁣⁣

If you’re an enthusiastic ‘pinner’ like I am, ask yourself why you’re attracted to a particular design. You’ll start to see a pattern in the styles you’re drawn to. Perhaps you’re more interested in earthy hues, or, sweet pastel colours. ⁣⁣⁣

I’m not a trend follower, meaning, I don’t follow trend colours but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. This is a very personal preference. I’ve once described a collection as coming up with a story, only instead of words, it’s told in motifs, lines and colours. The two hero prints are the protagonists, and then you’ll have the four supporting cast (complex coordinates) and four background actors (simple coordinates), the colour palette is the mood that sets the story. When I work on a ‘story’, I ask myself if I want it to be a romantic comedy, a tragedy, or a comedy? The lighter the mood of the story, then so will the colours.⁣⁣⁣

I’d normally choose between 8 - 14 colours to work with at the start of a collection. As I develop the ‘story’ I may reduce or increase it. I may include more shades or add a darker colour to increase contrast.
