Another wonderful example of a battledore placenta ✨.
.
Defined as a placenta in which the umbilical cord is attached at the border/ margin/edge, instead of centrally.
.
It is so-called because of the putative resemblance to the racquet used in battledore, a precursor to badminton!
.
It rarely occurs (approx 7% of singleton pregnancies) and does not affect placental functioning, often described as a variation of normal. The cords are less mobile however and are prone to compromise.

When I was 18 I remember my herbal medicine teacher at Naropa University telling our class that a new mother could share her placenta medicine with an older woman, like her own mother or auntie, so that she too could reap the benefits from the precious hormones contained in this organ (and perhaps, the more subtle energetic ones too).
