I have tried a lot of different methods and backgrounds since starting my business before settling on my favourite white background. I LOVE the look of a white background for my products, but it is such a pain to get it clean and shadow free. If the light is off there is no hiding it at all! Sometimes I end up retaking my photos many many times as the light on that day wasn’t good. It can be so frustrating 🙈 To capture my photos I use two white foam boards (one to put the product on and one to bounce the light), my iPhone, my @photolightcase and natural light. I will either photograph on my desk in my studio or outside. Once the photos are taken I put them into photoshop and edit the photos, sometimes using the brush tool to erase uneven light to try and get that white look. I use my DSLR for better quality photos & I learned a few tricks from my previous job at an art museum where I use to do a lot of the marketing for online sources and help run the social media. I have a planning brain, so it’s easier for me to always have some kind of plan or an idea ready, and have photos taken ahead of time or the day of, I always have my camera in my studio charged up. I took this photo yesterday after soldering this shadow box ring I made. I really love the way silver looks after it is annealed and quenched in water, the steam that comes off the water- the loud noise it makes. It’s like a zap of energy- woo! Then I get to hold it and inspect it to see if the the solder flowed correctly. When it does- I am always happy and usually spurt out an ‘ AWWW YEAHHH ‘ ( I am a weird dorko ) I want to try and document all the beautiful stages in the rough- all the parts you don’t see- making jewelry is really grimey and raw and harsh, somehow the end result- the shiny and polished and beautiful seems so elegant. But to get there- you go through the opposite. Kind of a life lesson through being a metalsmith. I know, I know- I always try to look for meaning in everything. Well, hate to break it to ya but you can’t take that away from me!
