An exquisite monumental woodblock print on paper titled “Veldt (B)” and numbered “37/70”, by important Japanese artist Joichi Hoshi (b. 1913-1979). Ox blood arterial tree image with red-to-salmon foliage, rising from a baby blue and bronze marsh, set against a glowing metallic gold background. Striking from afar, and stunning from up close as one is better able to appreciate the incredible artistry involved in producing such a vivid, complex and textural print from multiple passes of a large number of intricately carved woodblocks. Took that description from a website im not quite that eloquent. Piece was backed onto an acidic board so it had to go. Board was split as close to the artwork and scraped and sanded away to expose the paper and remove the adhesive. After this it was deacidified to buffer the piece and neutralize residual acidity. Now it’s ready to be rebacked framed and displayed. Truly a beautiful piece and a painstaking meticulous project.

If you watched a couple of the videos we posted in the last week, you’ll have seen how we have used Japanese tissue to help consolidate flaking paint. These few photos show the extent of the paint loss. We’ve successfully stabilised the painting and prevented further losses, so now we’re onto the clean (photos tomorrow!) and the retouching process.
