Working at Refuge has really opened my eyes to the devastating impact of gender-based violence in this country. Not only does domestic abuse affect women of all backgrounds, it is a key contributor to issues like female homelessness, offending and suicide (it is estimated that three women a week commit suicide as a result of domestic violence).
.
It is absolutely a gendered issue, with two women being killed EVERY WEEK by a current or former partner and one in four of us affected in our lifetime. And yet, when I tell people I work at Refuge, many first questions are around how many men are affected. We need to change the narrative around this massively important subject, and Refuge are leading the charge, day-to-day and at policy level.

If you can spare £5 towards my fundraising page (link in bio), please donate to help the amazing Refuge keep supporting survivors and working towards a world where gender-based violence is not tolerated. Thankz 🤘

#vawg #domesticabuse #feminisminaction #womensrightsTo mark #IDM2019, Rachel Deussom of Human Resources for Health 2030 Program, Chemonics International and I have dialogued on the need for a global policy transformation - midwives need to be enabled and elevated with whole-system support. Link to full blog in bio. "This year’s theme for the International Day of the Midwife, commemorated on May 5, is “Midwives: Defenders of Women’s Rights.” This includes the right for every midwife—and all health workers—to decent work and a safe and dignified workplace. Saving lives does not mean a midwife should risk her own. We hear stories of too many midwives burnt out, from not just the long hours guiding families through their complex and unpredictable travails, but from the lack of basic infrastructure or professional support to deliver high-quality care. Behind every miraculous and unique birth, every interaction between a midwife and her clients, the midwife’s “whole system” must be strong and supportive." #Midwives - Defenders of #WomensRights

⁣
on average, women make approximately 80% of what men do annually — while performing the exact same jobs. the gender pay gap can be attributed to many factors, including occupational segregation, bias against working mothers and direct pay discrimination. other factors such as racial bias, disabilities, access to education and age also come into play. different groups of women experience different gaps in pay (AAUW). ⁣
⁣
at the same time that women are making less than men, they are asked to pay higher prices on personal hygiene items than their male counterparts — the “pink tax.” items such as hair products, soaps, razors and more that are marketing toward women are all marked up in prices. and for what? the ingredients in both “male” and “female” products (...which serve the same purpose...) are almost always the same but the female products are pink and have flowers. check out the chart to see some examples (InPrint). ⁣
⁣
there is indubitably an inherent gender bias and it needs to cease. ⁣

Progress in reducing neonatal mortality is slower than in mortality among children aged 1–59 months. In many West African countries, data provided by UNICEF indicates that between 15 to 20% of newborn deaths in their first month of life are due to sepsis. According to the World Health Organization, improved access to WASH and improved handwashing for all healh workers could help prevent infections, and the risk of sepsis in health facilities." #Midwives - Defenders of #WomensRights

"Vertical segregation, where female health workers do not advance to higher leadership and remuneration as their male counterparts, remains a challenge within primary health care and health systems. More evidence is needed to understand how midwives’ enhanced leadership role can optimize health systems.
This International Day of the Midwife, let us support midwives’ “whole system” so they can be the change agents that our world needs." #Midwives - Defenders of #WomensRights

#sayhernamenigeria #womensrights #abujaraidonwomen #hearwomen✨Happy International Day of the Midwife 2019!✨ This years International Day of the Midwife is focused on our role in defending women’s rights.
As Student Midwives we are learning how to be experts in ‘normal’ birth. However, our role is SO much more than that. We are advocates for women.
No two women are the same. When we care for a woman, we are not just focused on the pregnancy, labour and birth - we care for them as a whole: supporting their values, beliefs and expectations.

Having a baby can be a vulnerable, emotional time. We want women to feel safe and empowered. We want women to know we have their back, whatever the situation, whatever the choice, whatever the outcome.
We know that our contribution can be but a drop in the ocean, however sometimes that is all that is needed to make a positive change.

See you at the voting booth.

Other symptoms can include pain in lower abdomen, pain during sexual intercourse and discomfort with bowel movements, amongst several others. If this sounds like you, contact us!This is for all the women who have been thru/ or still going thru ANY abuse. You may feel lost, but you’re the strongest person this world has ever known.
